Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 1:11AM Asheville county in North Carolina will be accepting mattresses at it's county facility to help keep the materials out of landfills. Click the link below to read the entire article. If only Ohio was so responsible with its waste, lets go legislative represenatives.

Where do the mattresses go after they have been collected at their county facility? Will they actually recycle them properly?
Who actually does the recycling for them?
Just wondering...

Isn't it amazing how something so beneficial takes so long to become the standard? Thanks for letting us know the progress that Asheville is making.
Most people shopping for new products like mattresses or any other large purchase would keep some kind of budget in mind, with some scope of extending it. Markets are full of mattresses and each has some additional feature that may appeal to a small section of customers.
I hope they don't think of dumping the mattresses somewhere else. Cleaning up landfills is a great idea, but hopefully they can do more. Thanks for sharing.
Matt,
I hope that people and businesses come to their senses that it is very comparable to recycle mattresses as it is to landfill them.
Thanks for your response
Ashvilles' Mattresses and Box Springs are collected and delivered to my location . We deconstruct the units , seperate and bale up the different material. We sell that back to the manufactor to be made into new products such as cars and carpet pad. They even use one of the materials to make Kevlar. There is no reason for a mattress to be in a landfill. They should be baned from all landfills. Nice web site!
It was my understanding that the mattresses from Asheville were being sent to Conigliaro industries. Have you just become the new vendor for Asheville
It is hard to find a recycling center today that will accept your old mattress. Most of those centers do not want to accept old mattresses because of the non-recyclable chemical materials in it. Hopefully, North Carolina did find a way to recycle mattresses in an eco-friendly manner.
The next time you buy a new mattress, consider how you are going to dispose of it in the future. There are now biodegradable mattresses made from natural materials like bamboo and latex. They last longer plus they can get recycled easier.
